Spatial [RE] claimer

Phantom limb

Performance activism

Women’s rights are violated on a daily basis through means of sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and femicide.

The spatial [re] claimer proposes a weapon for women to reclaim their space in the public space.

Concept

Mainly to fulfill the beauty standards of the time women were often required to wear uncomfortable undergarments that would shape their form.

This sometimes resulted in impractical ways of maneuvering through spaces and sometimes led to death caused by fire.

The phantom limb was Inspired by the eighteenth-century court dresses, where Gowns were supported by rounded side hoops of different extension and depth.

Skirt

Trail

A 3m long trail provides extra length in the blind spot areas.

Materials

Space blanket/emergency blanket/aluminium foil.

Elastic bands

Cotton

Steel wire

Location

The phantom limb was tested paraded through the streets of Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Mainly to record peoples reactions and make a statement.
